International Education PolicyCurriculumInternational Education Policy, like other master's programs at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, is a one-year program requiring 8 courses to graduate. The IEP curriculum is rigorous but flexible, providing students with structured choices in international education and related curricular areas. In addition to the course requirements, IEP students participate in a bimonthly seminar usually on Mondays from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. IEP students must complete three required courses:
Note: students, who have already covered these topics in previous courses, may request an interview with the respective faculty member to discuss obtaining a written exception from taking these three required courses. In addition to the three required courses, IEP students must complete at least one additional course or two modules in International Education such as:
Students may complete courses offered by other graduate schools at Harvard, MIT, or Tufts, if the course has a substantial focus on international development studies or international education, to fulfill the requirement of this additional course. Please consult the IEP Program Director if you have questions about whether a particular course meets this description. For general information about taking courses at other Harvard graduate schools, please reference the section called "Cross-Registration" below. IEP students must also take at least one additional course in Research and Evaluation from the list below.
In addition to the course requirements students are encouraged to take at least one course that focuses directly on instructional and curriculum design, learning or the relationship between human development and pedagogy.
Cross-RegistrationMany HGSE students choose to take courses at other Harvard graduate schools (aka, cross-registering), including the Harvard Business School (HBS) and the Kennedy School of Government (KSG). Harvard's schools operate on different schedules. Therefore, remain mindful of school's individual calendars and deadlines: start of classes, vacations, and exams.
