Complementary Learning in Action
As complementary learning takes root across the country, Complementary Learning
in Action shares innovative examples and lessons learned from those initiatives.
This series documents the ways that diverse cities, counties, and states are
employing complementary learning approaches to serve children across ages and
across settings. It highlights key themes and emerging strategies to help build
knowledge and inform others in the field.
The
Jacksonville Children's Commission
Aiming for a more coordinated system of care from birth through adolescence,
the Jacksonville (Florida) Children's Commission (JCC) is changing the way that
itand the communityviews and serves families. JCC supports and coordinates
city-wide children's services through grant-making, technical assistance, and
professional development. In coordinating its prevention and intervention efforts
across ages and sectors, the Commission hopes to be a catalyst for community-wide
change.
The
SUN Service System
The SUN Service System is a unique countycityschool
partnership designed to align resources and promote success for all children,
youth, and families in Multnomah County, Oregon. SUN is an anti-poverty and
prevention effort, which connects educational, social, health, and other services
under one umbrella. SUN leaders view education not as an end itself, but as
a pathway to positive development and self-sufficiency. As part of this vision,
they see schools as community centers that play a vital role in the health and
success of both individual youth and the community as a whole.
Alignment
Nashville
Under the leadership of Alignment Nashville, diverse community
members and organizations are coming together to leverage existing resources
in support of Nashville's youth and the Metro Nashville Public Schools. This
effort is devoted to helping public schools succeed and ensuring a comprehensive,
quality education for all of the city's children and youth.
