Pamela A. Mason is the director of the master’s program in Language and Literacy and the Jeanne Chall Reading Lab. Her professional and research interests encompass the effects of text structure on comprehension, the interaction of readability and background knowledge, the issues of literacy learning for diverse student populations, and the process of developing effective schoolwide literacy programs using qualitative and quantitative data. Mason has extensive experience as a reading/language arts curriculum coordinator for a variety of local school districts and as an elementary school principal. She is active in the International Reading Association, having served as a cochair of the Urban Diversity Initiatives Commission and having coedited Promising Practices for Urban Reading Instruction. She is a past president of the Massachusetts Reading Association and currently serves as the chair of its Studies and Research Committee. Mason has provided professional development for teachers, reading teachers, literacy coaches, and administrators nationally.
