Alumni Council Award

2005 Alumni Council Award for Outstanding Contribution to Education

The Harvard Graduate School of Education Alumni Council is pleased to present the 2005 Alumni Council Award for Outstanding Contribution to Education to Elizabeth Hale, Ed.M.'75. The award was presented to Betty on Wednesday, June 8th at 5 p.m. during HGSE's Pre-Commencement Ceremony in the Gutman Conference Center, Appian Way, Cambridge, MA. Outgoing Alumni Council Chair, Laura Cooper, Ed.D.'88 presented the award, which read:

As an educator, leader and advocate, Elizabeth Hale has devoted her life's work to fostering educational policies that have improved the opportunities and outcomes for children and young people in this nation.

Betty has unendingly dedicated herself to initiatives that will continue to identify, develop and support educational leaders in the world of policy, practice and research as they address the complex problems of education in a democratic society.

Her commitment to bring traditionally underrepresented groups into the "leadership pipeline," led her to persuade top educators to mentor these emerging leaders.

Betty's dedication and commitment to education are witnessed not only in her work, in this country and around the world, but in her volunteer efforts at this institution.

Recognizing the crucial role that HGSE can play in the creation of educational leaders, Betty has been enormously influential and generous in both her time and expertise, and she has demonstrated a sense of giving to HGSE that goes far beyond financial contributions.

For these and other profound contributions to the field, it is with great respect that we bestow this award upon Elizabeth Hale.

About the Award

Each year, the Alumni Relations Office solicits nominations for the Award from the alumni body. Candidates must be graduates of the Harvard Graduate School of Education and have made a significant contribution to education during their professional careers.
