2002 Alumni Council Award for Outstanding Contribution to Education

The Harvard Graduate School of Education Alumni Council was pleased to present the 2002 Alumni Council Award for Outstanding Contribution to Education to Roland S. Barth, Ed.M.'62, Ed.D.'70. The award was presented to Dr. Barth on Wednesday, June 5 at 5 p.m. during HGSE's Pre-Commencement Ceremony in the Gutman Conference Center, Appian Way, Cambridge, MA. Alumni Council member Alison Amoroso, Ed.M.'90, presented the award.

Author, educator, and school leader, Barth has inspired communities of learners and leaders for nearly four decades as a consultant to schools, school systems, state departments of education, universities, foundations and businesses in the U.S. and abroad. After serving as a public school teacher and principal for fifteen years and garnering a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1976, Barth joined the HGSE faculty, where he taught for thirteen years. During his tenure, he served as director of the Study on the Harvard Graduate School of Education and Schools, founding director of the Principals' Center and of the International Network of Principals' Centers, and senior lecturer on education. Barth is also the author of many articles and the books Learning by Heart, Cruising Rules, Improving Schools from Within, Run School Run, and Open Education and the American School.

About the Award

The HGSE Alumni Council first established the Alumni Award for Outstanding Contribution to Education in 1985 in order to recognize the significance of service to education by many alumni of the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Each year, the Alumni Relations Office solicits nominations for the Award from the alumni body. Candidates must be graduates of the Harvard Graduate School of Education and have made a significant contribution to education during their professional careers.
