I loved my year in the School Leadership Program. An absolute strength of the program is that with its strong internship component it allows you to have one foot in theory and one foot in practice. I was able to see many of the things that I was learning in class put into action in the school where I was a principal intern. The school leadership program helped me to think, read, and write about many of the "big ideas" in education and education reform-the lingering inequalities in our schools, using data and research to inform our instruction and decisions, learning to standards, creating job-embedded, ongoing professional development, having high expectations for all students-while enabling me through a series of application exercises to formulate action plans that I will use to address these issues as a leader. I deeply appreciated the quality of the readings and the thoughtfulness of the written assignments. It also was an absolute privilege to work with HGSE professors who are the top researchers and scholars in the field of education. Professors were very approachable and extremely supportive. Most importantly, perhaps, the school leadership program gave me a year to see myself as a leader. I had a year to try on the role of a principal and wrap my mind around it. It gave me the confidence to enter my job interviews in the spring already thinking of myself as a school leader.
