Standardized Tests

Please see the 2009-2010 Class Profile for more information about average accepted student test scores.

GRE

Do I have to take the GRE?

Yes. All applicants are required to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test. Note: Ed.L.D. applicants ONLY may choose to submit GMAT scores in lieu of GRE scores.

How recent must my GRE score be?

The test must have been taken on or after February 1, 2005. Your application will not be considered complete until an official GRE score report has been received.

What is the last day I can take the GRE?

We strongly recommend taking the GRE no later than November 2009, in order for the scores to reach the Admissions Office by the application deadlines.

What is the institutional code?

You must request that official test scores be sent directly to the Admissions Office from the appropriate testing agency; photocopies of test scores are not acceptable. HGSE's institution code for the GRE is 3428. You do not need a department code for HGSE because the Admissions Office is the only department within HGSE who receives scores from ETS. However, GRE test takers who find they are required to enter a department code may list 5199 ("any department not listed").

What should I do if I took the GRE under another name (e.g., a maiden name)?

If your credentials will be submitted under any other name, be sure to indicate this in the Personal Information section of the online application.

How many scores does HGSE accept?

HGSE will see all of your scores from the past five years, but you can self-report up to two of your scores in the online application.

GMAT

May I take the GMAT?

If you are applying to the Doctor of Education Leadership program, you may submit official scores from the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) in lieu of GRE scores.

How recent must my GMAT score be?

The test must have been taken on or after February 1, 2005. Your application will not be considered complete until an official GMAT (or GRE) score report has been received.

What is the last day I can take the GMAT?

We strongly recommend taking the GMAT no later than November 2009, in order for the scores to reach the Admissions Office by the application deadline.

What is the institutional code?

You must request that official test scores be sent directly to the Admissions Office from the appropriate testing agency; photocopies of test scores are not acceptable. GMAT does not prompt you for an institution or department code specific to HGSE - simply search for Harvard Graduate School of Education.

What should I do if I took the GMAT under another name (e.g., a maiden name)?

If your credentials will be submitted under any other name, be sure to indicate this in the Personal Information section of the online application.

TOEFL

How do I know if I need to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)?

If your native language is not English, you must submit the results of the TOEFL and, if taking the paper-based test, the Test of Written English (TWE).  You are exempt from this requirement if you have earned a bachelor's degree from an institution where English was the language of instruction.

Do I have to take the TOEFL if I received a graduate degree in the United States?

Completion of graduate-level degrees at an institution where the instruction is conducted in English does not exempt an applicant from the TOEFL requirement.

How recent must the TOEFL score be?

The test must have been taken on or after February 1, 2008.

Does HGSE have a minimum TOEFL score?

HGSE seeks applicants with scores of at least 100 TOEFL on the Internet-based test, 250 TOEFL and 5 essay rating on the computer-based test, or 600 TOEFL and 5 TWE on the paper-based test.

What is the institutional code?

You must request that official test scores be sent directly to the Admissions Office from the appropriate testing agency; photocopies of test scores are not acceptable. HGSE's institution code for the TOEFL is 3428. You do not need a department code for HGSE because the Admissions Office is the only department within HGSE who receives scores from ETS. However, TOEFL test takers who find they are required to enter a department code may list 99 ("any department not listed").

What should I do if I took the TOEFL under another name (e.g., a maiden name)?

If your credentials will be submitted under any other name, be sure to indicate this in the Personal Information section of the online application.
