Concurrent Degree Program and Requirements

Concurrent J.D./Ed.M. and J.D./Ed.D.

For students who wish to combine advanced study in education with a legal perspective, HGSE and Harvard Law School offer the J.D./Ed.M. and J.D./Ed.D. concurrent degree programs. Depending on the HGSE degree sought, students may reduce by up to one semester the amount of time it would ordinarily take to complete the two degree programs separately. Students must apply and be admitted to each school's degree program and satisfy all academic requirements for each degree. They must also pay full tuition for each degree, apart from any financial aid for which they may be eligible. For information about the rules governing concurrent degree arrangements, contact the HGSE Registration Office. Applicants should also contact the Law School's dean of students for more information on the rules governing concurrent degree arrangements in education and law.

For more information, e-mail the HGSE Registration Office.

Special Students

Applicants who wish to take up to two courses per year at the Harvard Graduate School of Education without the constraints of a formal degree program may wish to apply for Special Student status. This option is available for professional educators seeking to enhance current work, college or university faculty from institutions other than Harvard, and advanced graduate students seeking to enhance their degree program.

A limited number of applicants may be admitted for non-degree study each year. Course enrollment is on a space-available basis. Please note that Special Students are not eligible for HGSE funding, housing, or office space. Apply to become a Special Student.

Berkeley Exchange Program

Berkeley Exchange Program enables a doctoral student who has completed residence at HGSE for the equivalent of two academic years to study at the Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Berkeley, for one or two semesters. HGSE students at Berkeley will continue to pay HGSE tuition, and their Berkeley grades will be recorded on their HGSE transcripts. Permission to study at Berkeley requires the approval of the student's advisor, the area chair, and the HGSE academic dean. Applications are available from the Registration Office.

Visiting Fellows

A select number of visiting fellows may be admitted for a period of enrollment of at least three months and up to one year. This option is available for advanced doctoral students at other universities conducting relevant research. They will be granted full access to all Harvard libraries and facilities. Each visiting fellow must be sponsored by an HGSE faculty member.
