Technical vocational education at Madison Park is competency based with an instructional focus on Literacy Across the Curriculum (LAC). All technical vocational classes incorporate teaching strategies to improve students’ reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. Teachers use Key Questions to activate prior knowledge, support using higher order thinking skills and real life problem solving, generate thoughtful discussion, incorporate extensive writing using Learning Logs, and perform collaborative problem solving. Students are expected to undertake a wide range of research projects and must access the technical tools, print journals and technical manuals to ensure their education addresses industry needs. As a graduation requirement, the senior project showcases students' mastery of their vocational areas in three parts: a research paper, a presentation to a group, and a product determined by the student and the teacher. As of June 2008, the racial breakdown was as follows: 1.0% Asian, 47.6% Black, 45.3% Hispanic, 4.5% White, 0.2% Native American, 0.1% Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, and 1.2% Multi-Race, Non-Hispanic. Special education services were provided to 30.1% of students.
