School Leadership

Program Description

School Development Strand

The School Development Strand of the School Leadership Program is designed for individuals who want to improve children's learning and well-being in roles other than licensed principals in district-run schools. Such individuals might wish to start or serve as leaders in charter schools or other less traditional educational settings. The strand introduces individuals to a variety of new leadership roles and provides them with skills in pedagogical, curricular, organizational, political, and entrepreneurial sectors.

Participants will articulate and design their ideal vision of what a great school — one that provides high quality teaching and learning for ALL students — looks like. Over the year, they will focus on understanding exactly what leaders do to create or improve great schools and, through reflection and self-assessment and planning, ascertain where they are in developing and assessing their own abilities to take on these leadership roles. Through an intensive half-time practicum in a school setting similar to the one they wish to start or lead, students will be able to develop their skills and practice their leadership. Those students interested in developing concrete action plans for starting a school will have the opportunity to do so, through coursework and by finding SLP colleagues with interests similar to their own.
