School Counseling

School counselors, traditionally known as guidance counselors, support students’ social, personal, and educational development through individual, classroom, and school-wide interventions and prevention programs.  While specific roles vary by school, district, and grade level, school counselors are typically involved in the following:

  • Counseling students regarding academic, personal, and emotional issues in group and individual settings
  • Developing school-wide programs, preparing and implementing classroom lessons, employing strategies to foster resiliency, and addressing barriers to learning and achievement
  • Consulting and collaborating with teachers, families, and administrators to ensure school success
  • Participating in Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings and planning
