Teaching and Learning with Eleanor Duckworth

Professor Eleanor R. Duckworth teaches one of the most popular L&T courses, T440 Teaching and Learning. This course seeks to bring a Freirean approach to teaching situations by valuing the learners' experiences and insights. Rather than conceiving of teaching as explaining and learning as listening, this course looks at situations where teachers listen and learners do the explaining. The course starts from the premise that there are endless numbers of adequate pathways for people to come to understand subject matters. Photos show students at work on the T440 moon exercise.

L&T student Emily reflects on her experience, in T440, Professor Duckworth created a classroom that instantaneously transformed into a community wherein each student possessed a voice to articulate his or her "wonderful ideas." Through my participation in the course, I developed a deeper conception of the complexities of being a teacher, but more significantly, I gained a window into understanding myself and who I am as a learner.

Please visit the T440 website to learn more about this exciting course.
