William Corbett
Beyond his many books of poetry, poet and art critic Corbett has written Philip Guston's Late Work: A Memoir, Furthering My Education, and New York Literary Lights. His most recent collection of poetry is Boston Vermont.

James Ackerman, Arthur Kingsley Professor of Fine Arts Emeritus at Harvard University is one of America's foremost historians of art and architecture. His many books and collections of essays include Distance Points: Essays in Theory and Renaissance Art and Architecture and the classic Palladio.

Ralph A. Smith
Ralph Smith is Professor Emeritus, Educational Policy Studies at the University of Illinois. A luminary in the field, Smith's has authored and edited numerous books including: General Knowledge and Art Education: An Interpretation of E.D. Hirsch's Cultural Literacy Aesthetics, Arts Education, and Disciplined-based Art Education: Origins, Meaning, and Development.

An Encounter with Hartford's Safe Haven
for Youth and the Performing Arts

Artists Collective
A return performance by students and instructors from this nationally recognized urban community art center founded by well known alto saxophonist Jackie McLean. The Collective's founding executive director is Dollie McLean; its dance director is Cheryl Smith; and its acting music coordinator is Rufus Foote.The rites of passage ceremony (YABOO) was conceived and choreographed by Aca Lee Thompson (master choreographer since 1976).

Long Term Artist Residencies: The Artist Teacher Partnership
Judith Steinbergh
A well known freelance poet-in-the-schools, and a writer-in-residence for the Brookline Public Schools, Ms. Steinbergh develops curriculum and teaches poetry workshops for writers and teachers of writing. She is the Managing Editor of Talking Stone Press and author of Reading and Writing Poetry with Teenagers and Beyond Words, Writing Poems with Children.

After School Matters: Teens Talk of the Arts
Shirley Brice Heath
Margery Bailey Professor of English and Dramatic Literature at Stanford University and Senior Affiliate Scholar at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, Professor Heath has investigated the arts' role in enhancing pro-social, academic, and long-term values in youth from economically depressed areas. Her many books include: Ways With Words: Language, Life and Work in Communities and Classrooms.

Youth Insights at the Whitney Museum of American Art
Sandra Jackson
Head of School, Family and Intergenerational Programs at the Whitney, Ms. Jackson was joined by participants in the Youth Insights Program who provided an overview and shared examples of work from this innovative program that joins young people trained in art and its presentation with a variety of audiences of museum-goers.

Policy and Strategy for Funding Arts in Communities and Schools: Building Sustaining Relationships with Philanthropies
Mitchell Korn
The Wall Street Journal called Mitchell Korn a "one man arts education industry." Founder and President of Artsvision, Mr. Korn has created blueprints for collaborative arts education initiatives in numerous cities including New York, Chicago, and San Francisco. An expert on orchestral education, Mr. Korn focused this talk on issues in policy and funding.

School the Musical, a.k.a. Meet Those Standards!
A Show Written and Performed by Students in response to the English language arts standards in New York City schools
Written by eleventh-grade English students at the High School of Graphic Communication Arts and edited and co-produced by the Manhattan Playhouse which is housed in the school. School the Musical let us hear from students on the subject and impact of standards. Diana Walker, Producing Artistic Director; Bill Van Horn, Associate Artistic Director.

The Arts in Education: Imprints of Individuals
Deborah Putnoi
Well known for her work in two and three dimensions, artist Deborah Putnoi explores the elements of time and culture through words, textures, and marks. Her widely exhibited paintings and collages are informed by her work in research, writing, and education. Marking AIE's Millennium Year, Ms. Putnoi led students in a collective hands-on arts experience.
