Joseph Vigil
USP Cohort 8, Superintendent, Albuquerque (NM) Public Schools
"The
work required of me as a doctoral student in the Urban Superintendents
Program has greatly contributed to my professional growth. I am more knowlegeable
about programs in urban school districts designed to improve student learning.
I have also become much more discerning of the differences in the quality
of models utilized for school improvement, ready to ask better questions
prior to adoption of initiatives, and more confident in my approach to
school reform as a district administrator. My confidence does not stem
from having all the answers but rather from the knowledge that thoughtful,
planned action is required over time if we are to see the kinds of improvement
we desire in our schools. In addition, I now have access to a wealth of
expertise through the close working relationships I have established with
fellow students in USP, the superintendents who have served as USP mentors,
and Harvard professors. They are all professionals whose knowledge and
skills I access on a regular basis."
