The Head, Heart, & Hands of Leadership

"The Head, Heart, & Hands of Leadership"
A Painting by Boston Public School Students at Artists for Humanity

On May 4-6, 2000, the Urban Superintendents Program celebrated its ten-year anniversary. Here we offer reflections on the program's history and the impact of our work.

Our history is a record of our efforts to continuously improve the quality of the program and increase its effectiveness. Each year we set higher standards for the students, enrich the curriculum and improve our pedagogy, and strengthen the range and intensity of the supports provided to students.

The impact of the work of our students and graduates is seen in the power of their ideals, the power they have as cohorts, the power of their learning, the power of their research, and the power of their leadership practice. The impact of the work of superintendents affiliated with the program is seen in the power of their new network, the power of their reflective practice, and the power of their mentoring. Together the power of the work of our students, graduates, and affiliated superintendents is seen in the collective power we all exercise to improve teaching and learning for children and youth attending urban schools across the country.

Making good teaching happen for every child, every day, in every classroom, is the single most important means by which public schools can deliver on their promise to enable all children to learn and achieve at high levels.
