This course will focus on reading and writing acquisition as developmental processes and effective methods of applying research to practice. Various instructional strategies for teaching reading and writing will be presented in relation to the research that supports their efficacy for addressing diverse student populations. The format will be a combination of lectures, discussions, and activities designed to create an understanding and appreciation of the complicated process of learning to read, K-12. Topics will include (but are not limited to) the history and perspectives on learning to read, developmental stages of reading, evaluation of materials for reading instruction, and effective reading programs. This is a required course for master's students in the Language and Literacy Program for licensure. Enrollment is limited; permission of the instructor is required.
