This course is designed to introduce students to the mental health issues facing children and adolescents in schools and their relationship to academic and social performance. The first part of the course will focus on understanding what constitutes a “problem,” taking into account the various factors that put some children and adolescents at increased risk as well as those factors that may contribute to their resilience. In the second part of the course, students will learn about some of the main areas of difficulty for children and adolescents in school settings. Throughout the course, particular attention will be paid to the way that culture and context shape the diagnosis of mental health problems as well as the decisions about school-based services. This course meets the psychopathology requirement for Risk and Prevention students pursuing licensure in school social work/school adjustment counseling.
